The recovery benefit will either be built into a policy’s residual benefit, but may also be added with a rider, in addition to the residual benefit.
One can suffer a “partial” disability, which can limit one’s ability to earn one’s total income, or an initial total disability might be followed by an extended period of residual (partial) disability. With this rider, if, due to sickness or injury, you also experience a loss of income of 15% (20% with some companies) and are gainfully employed, you will be considered residually disabled.
Unlike a residual benefit (that doesn’t include a recovery benefit), no specific loss of time or duties is required.
