November is National Caregivers Appreciation Month

November 14, 2016admin

November is the month designated for caregivers to be recognized for their tireless efforts during National Caregivers Appreciation Month. This year, the theme is “Take Care to Give Care,” and emphasizes the first rule of taking care of others, which is that caregivers must take care of themselves first. People often find it difficult physically and emotionally to care for their loved ones, and may turn to hiring a caregiver to step in. It is important for everyone to remember, however, that in order for caregivers to provide the best care possible, they must also take care of themselves.

Presidential Recognition for Caregivers

Celebrating this month enables everyone to not only celebrate the efforts of caregivers, but also to raise awareness of family caregiver issues, increase support for caregivers, and to provide education about a wide variety of important and relevant issues.

The Caregiver Action Network, also known as the National Family Caregivers Association, first promoted national recognition for caregivers in 1994, and President Clinton signed the first NFC Month Presidential Proclamation in 1997. Ever since, each president has followed suit by recognizing caregivers each November with his annual proclamation.

Taking Care with Disability Insurance

According to CaregiverAction.org, there are 90 million caregivers actively working in the United States, which means there are 90 million families who must compensate those caregivers. The costs associated with hiring a caregiving professional can vary greatly, depending on a variety of factors. One thing that is certain, however, is that when a family first realizes that a caregiver must be hired, one of the very first concerns at hand becomes, “How much will it cost?”

Imagine that you and your spouse are both working parents, and the loss of one income would spell financial disaster for your family. Suddenly, you find yourself ill or injured and unable to work – and unable to keep that income coming in. What would you do? Add to that the fact that you must also take on the added expense of having a caregiver tend to you for physical therapy, for example. Not only are you now missing your income, but you also must endure additional caregiver expenses related to your health.

It is for this very reason that everyone should have disability insurance in place. Maintaining disability insurance coverage can help you continue to receive a steady income if you are injured or ill and unable to work for a duration of time. Protecting your income with disability insurance can also include covering caregiver costs. Should a scenario like this occur, you can see that having this protection could make a world of difference to your family.
